Open House
"Wow, the Gipsy Kings, mach 4, established an immediate connection with the Zoo 'crowd' and brought them into the world where they live. There are a few bands that seem to transcend time and make an emotional connection with fans that's hard to explain, fitting right in with the animals and making constant reference to them, as well as excellent imitations of kookaberras. Like an updated Fab Four (ok, only one main vocalist), they did a virtual tour of smart, aggressive, and highly listenable pop rock. The new tunes held up, with "Intriguer" being as fine of an album released this year. Neil Finn, dressed and looking like a modern-day Fab, was up to the task, and I expect will have an open house for years to come, given the quality of this great show and the album (yes it is one) it supports. From the almost reverent "Don't Dream It's Over" to a light-hearted (and updated to include a Lindsey Lohan reference) "Chocolate Cake", this was intimate, lush, rocking pop music at its finest. And did I mention the sing-alongs -- I normally think they are dumb, but who could resist? (always take the weather the weather with you.....)"
